The Survival Guide represents a statewide collaborative effort on the part of rising second-year students to ease the transition to medical school for the incoming class. Although annual updates are intended, some remarks may be a bit outdated.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! All of your hard work has finally paid off - Welcome to IUSM!

The next four years will be challenging; just keep your eyes on the goal and you will make it. Remember that you were accepted into medical school because people believed that you could handle it - and you can!

During your first week of school, you will be flooded with information on how to survive and succeed during your time at IUSM. You will get many different perspectives and opinions, but in the end, YOU will have to figure out what works best for you. So listen to everything, but take it all with a grain of salt.

This Survival Guide was written to help you survive your first year, by those students who went through it most recently. Here, we give our honest opinions and suggestions on classes, what books to buy, places to eat and study, where to work out, good places to live, plus lots more! This first section is directed to all first years, while the following sections are divided by campus (see "Campus-specific" tabs).

We sincerely hope that our advice will save you time, money, and possibly some frustration. Remember, the people who organized this Guide did so because they care about you as colleagues and as people. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact on any of us! We wish you the best of luck!
