Finding the Basics
There are unfortunately not many apartments located within walking distance of campus, as USI is mainly a commuter campus (Eagle Village being the only one). However, there are several reasonable complexes within a 5-7 minute drive of campus, which include:
There are also many more complexes around town, but if you’re on the east side, be prepared to drive up to 20-25 minutes on your commute if traffic is heavy in the morning or evenings.
Places to Study
You will have 24-hr access to the Health Professions Building, Medical School Library, and IUSM-E classrooms with a key given to you at the beginning of 1st year
David L. Rice Library is USI's main library with hundreds of individual study areas and two large quiet reading rooms. Hours can be found on this webpage.
Talk to MS2’s before purchasing 'required' texts.
Health and Wellness
USI Health Center offers an Office Visit Plan (OVP) that includes gynecological, acute illness, and mental health and counseling services.
Details on health services provided can be found here: http://www.usi.edu/healthcenter/
USI also has a dental clinic located on the first floor on the Health Professions Building:

For those with private insurance (which is required for all IUSM students), there are two acute care outpatient clinics less than 3 miles from campus:
- St. Mary’s Convenient Care West: Weston Rd & Red Bank Rd 812-485-1550
- Deaconess Clinic West: 545 S. Boehne Camp Rd 812-429-1818
For emergencies, both St. Mary’s (closer to east side) and Deaconess Hospitals (closer to west side) have Emergency Departments.
USI has a new fitness center, which includes a free indoor climbing wall, various free exercise classes, extensive weight room, plentiful cardio machines, a 25-meter six-lane indoor pool, and indoor/outdoor basketball and volleyball courts; IUSM-E students have full access at no cost: http://www.usi.edu/rfw/
Other gyms include: Bob’s Gym, Olympus, YMCA, Tri-State Fitness Center, Shapes, St. Mary’s Heath Matters, (probably not worth the monthly costs considering what we already get for free)
Places to run: Many great running trails on campus, including a new asphalt pedestrian/bike trail that connects campus to nearby Burdette Park, State Hospital (just west of Green River Road on the Lloyd Expressway), Wesselman’s Park (just east of Green River Road on Lloyd)
Places to get a haircut
Fiesta, Guys & Dolls, Beaux Cheveux (in the Curtis building downtown off Main)
Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Franklin St.), The Methodist Temple (on Lincoln and Weinbach), Christian Fellowship Church (on the north side of town- Millersburg Road near HWY 57), First Presbyterian (in historic downtown).
- 5/3 Bank
- Old National Bank
- Bank One
- Teachers Credit Union.
Many of these are located in the University Shopping Center (Evansville unfortunately does not have a CHASE bank or ATM)
Schnucks has good produce; Aldi and Price Less Foods may be less expensive. They are all located across the street from each other in the University Plaza and the University Shopping Center; Walmart Supercenter on Red Bank Rd. also has most grocery items (produce is hit or miss)
For natural foods, try the River City Co-op at 16 Washington Ave, or Elbert’s on Vogel or Fresh Market and Adele’s Naturally as a choice for natural foods.
Bitterman Mini Shoppes & Farmer’s Market for local products and produce.
