Places to eat

Lunch on campus: LaFortune Student Center has several fast food places and a convenience store. Reckers is a quick restaurant near the South Dining Hall. It has great pizza! Also you can try some of the cafes on campus, particularly the one in Grace Hall.

Sandwiches: Subway, Quiznos, Jimmy John’s, CJ’s Pub, Panera Bread.

Asian: Mandarin House, The Great Wall, China Garden, Ming Hua, Hanayori, Mikado, Toyo Grill, Siam House, JW Chen’s.

Indian: Shalimar, Star of India.

Italian: Olive Garden, Papa Vino’s, Mancino’s (has great subs), Carraba’s, Fazoli’s.

Mexican: La Esperanza, Don Pablo’s, Hacienda (post-test therapy: good frozen Margaritas), Chipotle.

Pizza: Barnaby’s, Rocco’s, Eduardo’s, Bruno’s, Marco’s, Nicola’s, Pizza Hut (great lunch buffet), Polito’s.

Casual Dining: Friday’s, Chili’s, Lonestar Steakhouse, Outback Steakhouse, Houlihan’s, Red Lobster, Macri’s.

Upscale: Tippecanoe Place, Carriage House, The Emporium, Essenhaus, LaSalle Grill, Old Chicago Steak House, The Bonefish Grill.

Desserts: Dairy Queen, Ritter’s Frozen Custard, Coldstone Creamery, Baskin Robbins, Yesterday’s.

Bars: Corby’s, Oyster Bar, Fiddler’s Hearth, Mishawaka Brew Co., BW-3’s (Tuesdays are $0.35 wing nights), The Linebacker, Heartland (Thursday is college night with $1 mixed drinks).


Movie Theaters: Showplace 16, Movies 14.

Parks: There are 6-8 public and 2 county parks in the area. You can cross-country ski and sled in the winter, and picnic or canoe in the summer. Check out St. Mary’s College has a nice nature trail that is great for walking/jogging.

Horseback Riding: Bittersweet Stables (just 5 miles north of the state line in Niles).

South Bend Symphony Orchestra: Morris Civic Auditorium.

Zoo: Potawatomi Zoo.

Annual Events: Firefly festival and Ethnic Festival (both in the summer), Pops at the Cove.

Best Kept Secret: East Race Waterway (a kayak and canoe competition waterway with facilities for use by the public).

FYI: You may want to request the visitor’s guide put out by the South Bend/Mishawaka Convention and Visitors Bureau. It lists some banks, restaurants, museums, attractions and the phone numbers that you can call to get more information. Contact the SB/Mishawaka Convention and Visitors Bureau, 401 E. Colfax, P.O. Box 1667, South Bend, IN 46634. We also suggest that you invest in a good map. The one in the phone book is all right as long as you are only looking for major streets.
