IU School of Medicine coordinates several significant events throughout the academic year. All these events are handled by the Medical Student Affairs.
First Year Orientation
IUSM, MS1 Orientation is an introduction to IU School of Medicine. It is held on Thursday and Friday prior to the start of class each August and all first year IUSM students are required to attend.
White Coat Ceremony
The IUSM White Coat Ceremony marks a transformation for first year students entering into the medical community in the presence of family, friends and IUSM leadership. The formal program is generally held off campus on the Friday afternoon/evening of Orientation week and seating is limited.
Second Year Orientation
IUSM MS2 Students participate in a brief second-year Orientation, to help prepare them for the year ahead. Students attending outlying Centers will access via a video stream.
Third Year Orientation
Held first in June and then also in the Fall and Winter, students participate in Third-year Orientation, which prepares them for the second phase of medical training, including clinical rotations. This is managed by Undergraduate Medical Education.
Early in the fourth year, students are invited to participate in mock interviews with Adademic Advising & Career Counseling for a simulation of what they will experience as they apply for their residencies.
In March, fourth-year students learn the results of the residency matching program — and enjoy letting off steam.
The IUSM Senior Banquet & Awards Ceremony is an annual program sponsored by graduating Seniors and organized by their elected class officers. The program is held the Friday evening prior to Graduation and all students along with family and friends are invited to attend. Awards are presented to students, faculty, staff and departments for outstanding service to their class.
IUSM Graduation is held annually on the Saturday of Mother's Day weekend at the Indiana Convention Center in the Sagamore Ballroom. Family, friends and IUSM leadership gather to celebrate the graduates accomplishments.
