Third Year Orientation/GLIC

student with stethascope
As you prepare to make the transition from the predominately classroom environment to the clinical world of the clerkships, IUSM provides specific content as well as protective health measures to help smooth the transition.  On June 10-13, you will have Orientation/GLIC and attendance at the sessions is mandatory.

Even students who are scheduled for a vacation month as their first rotation must attend the general orientation and all associated intersessions beginning on June 10

In addition, there are a variety of activities both during Orientation/GLIC and that you must complete in advance.  Please read below and be sure to complete all assigned tasks on Oncourse by the deadlines so that the start of your clinical training will not be delay.

Health requirements - In preparation for the beginning of your clinical training, please check your copy of the immunization forms that you provided prior to matriculation to make sure your health records are complete, as some of you may have forgotten to submit follow-up information (such as proof of second and/or third Hepatitis B immunizations). If you do not have your copy, you may contact IUPUI Student Health Services (SHS) at 274-8214 to request a "Release of Information" form to receive your immunization records to check for completeness. Please do not wait until the last possible moment to verify this information.

In addition to updating your immunization records, you must submit to IUPUI Student Health Services documentation of your PPD tuberculin skin test by Friday, May 31st. This test is required annually and must be dated within three months prior to the beginning of your third year. Please note that the date and time (am or pm noted, or military time) that the test is placed, the date and time (am or pm noted, or military time) that the test is read and the results in mm MUST be recorded on the form turned in to SHS. The test must be read within a 48-72 hour window. Your documentation must be on record with SHS in Indianapolis by Monday, June 3rd. Students who fail to complete this requirement will be removed from rotations.

Documentation of completion of health requirements should be submitted to:

Universal Precautions - Annual training on Universal Precautions for health care workers at risk for bloodborne pathogen exposures is mandated by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Therefore, you will need to review this training once per year.
For your convenience, a website has been designed to facilitate training for IUSM faculty, staff, and students. The website is designed to allow you to review information on Universal Precautions, and also contains information on important bloodborne pathogens, such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The website also contains information on tuberculosis, which also presents significant risks to health care workers.
Please go to the ONCOURSE site to complete this required training by Monday, June 3rd. Once you have successfully completed the training module, you will have the opportunity to print a certification of completion. Please print this and keep it for your records.

Students are required to complete fit-testing for a TB respirator prior to beginning third-year clerkships. If you were not fit-tested during your second year of medical school, and would like to be tested in Indianapolis, please contact IUPUI Health Services, located in Coleman Hall, Suite 100, at (317) 274-1934 to schedule an appointment any time between now and June 10.(When you request your appointment, be sure to tell the scheduler that you are with the Class of 2015 so your name can be checked off the list.) Appointments are available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 am – 4:45 pm and on Thursday from 9:00 am – 4:45 pm. To avoid delaying the start of your third year, please schedule your appointment right away.
You will need to complete and print the required questionnaire and bring it with you to your appointment.
If you will be in an outlying campus for third year classes and would like to be tested at one those sites, please contact your centers office.
These measures are required for the protection of you and of your patients, therefore, students who fail to document completion of all health requirements and/or have not completed Universal Precautions training will be removed from clerkships.

Housing and Parking  - Students moving from the IUSM campuses should refer to IUPUI Parking Services for campus maps and information about parking on campus.   Students who are traveling to Indianapolis for Orientation/GLIC may contact Kimberly Anderson, Travel Coordinator for Indianapolis Campus (Kim Anderson) to obtain a parking permit.

If you have questions about orientation or universal precautions training, please contact my office (274-7173).
